Filing status check

Is your nonprofit still in good standing?

Three consecutive missed annual filings costs an organization its exempt status automatically โ€” no warning letter, no appeal. Check your record and see exactly where you stand.

Whatever it says, you will see the record and the date it came from.

Three things the record can say

  • Current

    Your filings are on record.

  • Gap building

You have missed filings but you are not out of time.

  • Revoked

Exempt status was lost. It can be reinstated, and the record shows the date it came from.

Revocation is automatic after three consecutive missed annual returns, effective on the due date of the third missed return. Source: Internal Revenue Code ยง6033(j). Reinstated organizations remain on the published list, and the IRS file lags, so read the record with its date.

What you get on every result

  • Your organization as the IRS public file has it โ€” legal name, address, classification
  • Your classification, and whether it matches what you actually do
  • Your filing history and any gap that is building
  • Whether donors can write off a gift to you today
  • Funders in your subject area near you
  • A source line on every single fact
